Here’s What’s Coming
Over the course of my life, I’ve had people tell me, “You should write,” or, “you could be a professional writer.”
It always made me feel really good to read that. Usually it was just after some passionate Facebook post, which I can write with the best of them. But I think 99% of my best writing has never been seen by anyone I know; it’s all in the ether of the internet, on things like sports chat forums and online discussions of all sorts, from movies to politics.
But I never knew how to write. At least, not the stories I wanted to tell.
Sure, anyone can do what I’m doing right now, and just write out the words in their mind; stream of consciousness stuff. I can tweet with the best of them.
So, I never wrote because I felt I didn’t know how. Not how to build stories. Not how to write a script. I just kept endless lists of ideas in my Notes app in iCloud (and still do). But I decided to do something about it.
I spent a little over a year at Full Sail University online in 2023 & 2024 and earned a Master of Science in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. I loved it. I hated college when I was an undergrad, and I hated it the 3 or 4 times I tried going back as a grad student. And I certainly hate the loans that I owe, and the idea of stacking more onto to them. So I knew I had to do something, and that program made me love to learn again. I will use what I learned from it…one day. I want to honor my families by starting a new business that celebrates their entrepreneurial histories in a new way. I just need an extra $50-100k if anyone has it laying around.
Anyway, I finished that program and kept thinking about what I almost went their for to begin with: their Creative Writing program. Long story short, I couldn’t resist. I re-enrolled. I’m a few months from graduating with an Associates in Applied Science in Creative Writing and I’m debating whether I will continue on towards the BFA. I don’t know if the federal government will loan me any more school money.
I’ve learned enough though to start working; I’m certainly capable of freelancing, but I’m not doing this to be a copyrighter for some corporation. I’m doing this to tell stories and scratch that itch in my soul to be creative.
So what you’ll see from me is a new online social media presence where I’m active creatively. It’ll be separate from my personal socials, which I’ve been drawing back from for awhile anyway.
You’ll see my blogging here and posting them on those new channels; when they’re ready for you to follow, you’ll see me sharing them. And of course, my posts will be viewable here, though I will likely pursue SubStack and/or Patreon as an outlet, too. It would be nice to make a few extra dollars from this work to start.
What you won’t see a ton of right away is the big work I’m doing: writing for film & television. I’m knee deep already in numerous projects that are very important to me. One thing I learned in this program at Full Sail is that, if I publish them online, I can’t sell them, because they’re already considered published! So, while I’d love to share with you the full details of the stories I’m writing, I won’t be sharing the full texts, because I want to sell these projects, if I don’t produce them on my own.
Speaking of, that’s one of the best ways to get found as a screenwriter these days: by writing something you can get produced. I’m working on a project specifically with that intent. And now that we see what we can do with SeeDance…my goodness. I might be making movies from my laptop, like everyone else. Crazy time to try to make it in Hollywood.
I am going to make it a point to write regularly about topics I like, such as sports, American politics, and entertainment; my next two blog posts, for example, are going to address what I think my favorite sports team, the Kansas City Chiefs, should do this offseason. The next is about one of my favorite pastimes that I’m just not interested in at all right now: professional wrestling. I have an idea that I think would make fans like me very interested again…especially if you watched the Monday Night Wars…and would make WWE a lot of money. If that one’s up your alley, I’d love to hear your thoughts when you read it.
In summary, yes, I’m going to be working on books and film & TV ideas with the intent to eventually earn agent representation and be able to sell my work professionally and transition into that work full-time; in the meantime, I hope you enjoy my thoughts on all things of the world, and that if you have the ability to support my other work by buying or subscribing to it, I’ll be grateful.
Thanks - and enjoy.
